What we like, and what we don’t

Worth having

  • Annual round-trip companion voucher from $119 in economy, and one on signup as well
  • Free first checked bag for you and up to eight guests on WestJet flights
  • WestJet points are pegged at 100 to the dollar, so the value is published rather than estimated
  • RBC states there are no earning limits at all
  • Unlimited emergency travel medical, plus trip cancellation and interruption

Watch out for

  • Taxes and fees are extra on the companion voucher, and it is not valid on Business or Member Exclusive fares
  • The anniversary voucher requires $5,000 of annual spending
  • Lounge "access" is a free membership with zero complimentary visits, and every visit costs US$32
  • $80,000 personal or $150,000 household income required
  • Travel medical drops from 15 days to 3 days at 65 and over
  • RBC publishes no tier structure for the 70,000 point welcome offer, and a second RBC page offers only 45,000 for the same card

What we value a point at

The earning fine print

1.5 WestJet points a dollar on everything, rising to 2 on groceries, gas and EV charging, transit and rideshare, and on WestJet flights and WestJet or Sunwing vacations. Because WestJet purchases are the only travel that earns the bonus rate, travel is recorded at the base rate here. RBC states there are no earning limits, which is an affirmative statement rather than an absence of information. WestJet points are pegged at 100 points to the dollar, so the valuation here is the published rate rather than our estimate. NOTE: this programme no longer uses "WestJet dollars"; every current RBC document says points.

What the offer actually requires

RBC advertises "up to 70,000 WestJet points", worth $700 at the pegged rate, but publishes no tier structure anywhere we could read: the legal footnotes sit behind a collapsed panel. A separate RBC campaign page advertises a smaller 45,000 point offer for the same card, so what you are offered may depend on which link you arrive through. A welcome companion voucher is issued after your first purchase. Additional cardholders and existing cardholders are not eligible.

What the benefits really mean

The annual round-trip companion voucher is the reason to hold this card. A companion flies for $119 in economy or $219 in premium anywhere in Canada and the continental United States, or $399 and $499 for the rest of the WestJet network, and TAXES AND FEES ARE EXTRA on top of that. It is not valid on Business fares, Member Exclusive fares, group bookings or vacation packages. You get one after your first purchase and one on each anniversary once you have spent $5,000 in the year. It can be swapped for a 30% flight discount, a $200 vacation credit or two lounge passes. Free first checked bag for you and up to eight companions on WestJet-operated flights. Travel medical is UNLIMITED rather than a dollar figure, which is why that field is blank; it covers 15 days, dropping to 3 days at 65 and over. Lounge access is a free DragonPass MEMBERSHIP with ZERO complimentary visits: every visit costs US$32. CAUTION: RBC information box PDFs from 2018 and 2022 still show a $119 annual fee and 19.99% purchases against the $139 and 20.99% on the live page.

Our verdict

A single-purpose card, and it is honest about that. If you and a partner fly WestJet once a year the companion voucher alone clears the $139, and the checked bag benefit stacks on top for a group of up to nine.

If you do not fly WestJet it earns 1.5% on most spending and gives you nothing else, which is beaten by half the no-fee cards on this page. Check the companion fare rules before you apply: taxes are extra and the cheapest fare classes are the only ones it works on.
