Recommended Bank Accounts

Shorter lists, each ranked on one thing. Every figure comes from the institution’s own published pages and fee schedules, and an account whose institution publishes nothing is left blank rather than counted as free.

  • Best chequing accounts in Canada92 comparedA chequing account is priced on two numbers that are usually printed far apart: the monthly fee, and how many transactions that fee actually covers. An account at $4 a month with 12 transactions costs more than one at $11 with no limit the moment you use a debit card twice a week.
  • Best high interest savings accounts in Canada55 comparedThe rate on a savings account is the whole product, and it is also the number most likely to be a limited time offer wearing an ordinary name. Every rate here is labelled as posted or promotional, because those are not the same promise.
  • No monthly fee bank accounts in Canada99 comparedEvery account on this page states a monthly fee of zero on the institution's own page. That is a different claim from an account whose fee is waived if you keep a balance, and a very different claim from one that never mentions a fee at all. Neither of those is here.
  • Best business bank accounts in Canada70 comparedBusiness banking is priced on volume, not on the headline fee. The account that looks cheapest is usually the one with the fewest transactions included, and cash deposits are charged by the thousand at almost every institution.
  • Unlimited transaction bank accounts in Canada72 comparedAn unlimited account is worth its fee only if you would otherwise pass the limit on a cheaper one. At a typical $1.25 per extra transaction, an account including 12 of them costs the same as an unlimited one somewhere around the thirtieth debit of the month.

None of these ask how you bank. The comparison does, and it costs every account against your own transactions and balance, which is a different answer from any list written in advance.
