What we like, and what we don’t
Worth having
- Membership Rewards points, which transfer to Aeroplan at one to one
- 10,000 bonus points in any calendar quarter you spend $20,000, so up to 40,000 a year
- Up to 70,000 points in the welcome offer
- No preset spending limit, which suits a business with lumpy monthly costs
- Rental car collision damage and $1,000 of mobile device insurance
Watch out for
- A flat 1 point a dollar with no bonus categories at all
- The quarterly bonus resets on calendar quarters, so an account opened in February gets a short first window
- It is a charge card, so there is no option to carry a balance
- Employee cards cost $50 each with none included
- Amex does not publish the foreign transaction fee anywhere we could reach
- Amex advertises extra points at "qualifying suppliers" without publishing the rate or the list

The earning fine print
Charge card. Amex Canada's own benefits page states 'Earn 1X the points for virtually every $1 in purchases' with no bonus categories, plus 'Earn 10,000 bonus points for each calendar quarter in which you spend $20,000 in purchases'. The quarterly bonus resets on CALENDAR QUARTERS, not the account anniversary, so an account opened mid-quarter has a short first qualifying period. Maximum 40,000 quarterly bonus points a year requires $80,000 of spend. Amex also advertises additional bonus points at 'qualifying suppliers' but does not publish the rate or the supplier list on the pages that render.
The welcome offer
- Welcome bonus
- 50,000 points after you spend $7,500, within 3 months
- Second tier
- 20,000 points after you spend $30,000, within 12 months
What the offer actually requires
Up to 70,000 Membership Rewards points total per Amex Canada's own small-business card page: 50,000 after $7,500 in purchases in the first 3 months, plus 20,000 after $30,000 in purchases in the first 12 months. Note the second tier requires $30,000 of spend, four times the first tier. No offer end date published.

What the benefits really mean
Certificate of insurance confirms: Travel Accident $100,000 loss of life; Car Rental Theft & Damage to actual cash value, no deductible, max 48 consecutive days, vehicle MSRP cap $85,000; Buyer's Assurance (extended warranty) $10,000 per item and $25,000 per Cardmember per policy year; Flight/Missed Connection/Denied Boarding and Emergency Baggage Delay $500 aggregate per occurrence; Lost or Stolen Baggage $500 per occurrence for all insured persons combined (jewellery sub-limit $300, golf clubs $250); Hotel Burglary $500. Purchase Protection $1,000 per occurrence and Mobile Device up to $1,000 per Amex's benefits page. Employee Card Misuse Protection up to $100,000 per Basic Cardmember, but only if the employee is terminated AND the card cancelled within 2 business days. There is NO travel emergency medical coverage on this card. Member extras: up to $100/yr Dell statement credits ($50 per 6-month period) and up to $120/yr Instacart ($10/month on a $10 minimum). Up to 99 supplementary cards. ANNUAL FEE COULD NOT BE SOURCED FROM THE ISSUER. Every Amex Canada product page (/en-ca/business/credit-cards/. And /en-ca/charge-cards/.) is JavaScript-gated and returns 'Consent is required to load the content'. Amex's static benefits, employee-card and compare pages publish the supplementary fee ($50) and the APRs but never the primary annual fee. Do NOT enter a third-party figure without confirming it from Amex directly. This is a CHARGE CARD, not a credit card. The 21.99% figure is the Flexible Payment Option rate, not a purchase APR on a revolving balance. The balance is due in full; a delinquent Due in Full balance is charged 30%, and the Flexible Payment Option rate escalates to 25.99% after 2 missed payments in 12 months and 29.99% after 3+. No free employee cards at all. Five employee cards costs $250/yr on top of the primary fee. Quarterly bonus is worth 10,000 points only if you spend $20,000 in a single CALENDAR quarter. Spend spread evenly across a quarter boundary earns nothing. No travel emergency medical insurance despite being a premium-priced business charge card. Employee Card Misuse Protection headline of $100,000 is conditional on cancelling the card within 2 business days of termination.
Our verdict
The quarterly bonus is what makes this work. A business spending $20,000 in a quarter collects 10,000 points on top of the 1 point a dollar, which lifts the effective rate to about 1.5 points a dollar, and at our Membership Rewards valuation that is roughly 3% on $80,000 of annual spending. That is a genuinely good return for $199.
Below that spending level it falls away fast. A flat 1 point a dollar with no categories is thin, and the quarterly window is unforgiving: $19,000 in a quarter earns nothing extra at all. Check the calendar too, because the quarters are Amex's, not yours, so an account opened mid quarter starts with a short one. And it is a charge card, so a slow receivables month becomes a cash flow problem rather than an interest charge.
