What we like, and what we don’t
Worth having
- No annual fee at all

- An 18.99% purchase rate, low for a free business card
- 25,000 points in the welcome offer for $3,000 of spending
- A 0% balance transfer promotion for businesses consolidating a balance
Watch out for
- BMO Rewards points are worth about half a cent toward non travel redemptions

- The 0% balance transfer promotion carries a 3% transfer fee, so it is not free
- No travel insurance and no lounge access

The earning fine print
2 BMO Rewards points per $1 on gas, office supplies and cellphone/internet bill payments; 1 point per $1 on everything else. BMO publishes no annual cap on the 2x categories for this card. Redemption from $1; BMO publishes 150 points per $1 toward travel and 200 points per $1 toward non-travel, so the conservative value is 0.5 cents per point.
The welcome offer

What the benefits really mean
90-day purchase protection and extended warranty of up to one additional year. Zero-liability fraud protection. Liability Waiver Program against employee card abuse. Up to 22 employee cards. Mastercard Easy Savings automatic rebates, H&R Block and Cirque du Soleil discounts, Instacart+ benefits, Avis and Budget car rental discounts. No travel insurance of any kind. PRODUCT RENAME: formerly the BMO Rewards Business Mastercard; the old slug still resolves to this card. The 0% balance transfer promo carries a 3% transfer fee, so it is not free money. BMO does not publish the additional/employee card fee for this no-fee card, nor the foreign currency conversion fee. No travel insurance despite being a 'travel rewards' card in BMO's own category listing.
Our verdict
For a free card the accelerated categories are the right ones. Gas, office supplies and telecom is what a small business actually charges, and unlike the World Elite version BMO publishes no cap on them here, so a business with heavy phone and supply bills earns on all of it.
The point value is the ceiling on how good it can be. BMO publishes 150 points per dollar toward travel and 200 toward everything else, so 2 points a dollar is about 1.3% at best and 1% for most redemptions. That is fine for a card that costs nothing, and it is the reason to take the $175 Ascend World Elite instead if your spending justifies it.
