What we like, and what we don’t
Worth having
- No annual fee and no fee for additional cards
- A secured rate starting at prime plus 1.99%, the lowest published starting point in the segment
- An unsecured rate starting at prime plus 3.49%
- Up to 5 cents a litre at Shell with a linked Scene+ membership
- It works as a line of credit and a card in one product
Watch out for
- Scotiabank's business card listing and the product page publish different rate ranges for the same card
- The rate is variable and moves with prime, so nothing here is fixed
- It earns no rewards at all
- The secured rate requires security, which not every business can post
- No travel insurance

What the benefits really mean
A revolving business line of credit issued on a Visa card. Credit limit minimum $5,000, up to $500,000 when secured. Purchase security and extended warranty protection up to 90 days. Avis car rental discounts up to 25% off base rates. Visa SavingsEdge. Visa Spend Clarity for Business. Interest is calculated on an Average Daily Balance with the daily rate derived by dividing the annual rate by 365 (366 in a leap year). SCOTIABANK'S OWN TWO PAGES DISAGREE ON THE RATE. The business credit cards listing page states 'As low as Prime + 1.99%' secured and 'As low as Prime + 3.49%' unsecured. The product page states 'From Prime + 1.99% to 9.49%'. Neither is a fixed APR, so purchase_apr is NOT PUBLISHED. Do not synthesise a number. This is a line of credit, not a conventional credit card. No grace period behaviour should be assumed. Scotiabank publishes no foreign currency conversion fee for this product. No personal guarantee statement is published; Scotiabank's posted Visa Business Card Cardholder Agreement contains no guarantee clause.
Our verdict
Prime plus 1.99% on a secured basis is the cheapest published starting rate for business borrowing on a card in Canada. For a business that can post security and genuinely revolves a balance, that is worth more than any rewards card in this comparison, and there is no fee attached to find out.
We record no APR because Scotiabank does not publish one. Its business cards listing says as low as prime plus 1.99% secured and prime plus 3.49% unsecured, while the product page says from prime plus 1.99% to 9.49%. Those are different claims and neither is a rate, so we will not print a number. Ask what you are actually being offered before you decide.
