Business card
Free, with nine free employee cards and 3% at restaurants and Costco gas. Each category is capped at $8,000 a year and CIBC contradicts itself on which rate applies.

What we like, and what we don’t
Worth having
- No annual fee and nine employee cards included at no cost
- 3% at restaurants and at Costco gas stations
- 2% at other gas stations and on Costco.ca
- $100 statement credit for $3,000 of spending in the first 120 days
- Costco Canada warehouses accept Mastercard, so it works where you shop
Watch out for
- Each elevated category is capped at $8,000 of annual spending, then drops to 1%
- The caps reset on 1 January, not on your account anniversary
- CIBC's product page and its benefits guide disagree on which categories earn 3% and which earn 2%
- A 2.5% foreign transaction fee
- A personal guarantee is required

The earning fine print
CAP STRUCTURE, CONSERVATIVE READING: CIBC's benefits guide states each elevated tier is limited to '$8,000 net annual card purchases' per category, after which that category earns 1%, and that 'the $8,000 limits will reset to zero annually on January 1'. A CALENDAR-YEAR reset, not the account anniversary. Earn_cap_annual is recorded as 8,000 because that is the per-category ceiling; a filter should treat it as $8,000 per bonus category rather than a single shared pool. THE TWO CIBC SOURCES CONFLICT ON WHICH CATEGORIES SIT AT WHICH RATE. The product page says 3% at Costco gas and restaurants and 2% at costcobusinesscentre.ca, Costco.ca, shipping, insurance services, other gas and EV charging. The benefits guide says 3% at Costco gas, restaurants, shipping, insurance services, other gas and EV charging, and 2% only at costcobusinesscentre.ca and Costco.ca. Earn_gas and earn_dining are recorded at 3% because both documents agree on Costco gas and restaurants; shipping, insurance services and non-Costco gas are treated at the lower 2% until CIBC resolves the contradiction. Costco warehouse purchases themselves earn only 1%.

What the benefits really mean
Mobile Device Insurance up to $1,000 per occurrence per insured person, for up to 2 years from purchase, with a 10% deductible on the depreciated device value; also covers devices financed through a provider payment plan. Purchase Security for up to 90 days from purchase and Extended Warranty doubling the manufacturer's warranty by up to one additional year. Both subject to a shared $60,000 lifetime maximum per cardholder across ALL CIBC cards held. No travel insurance of any kind. Up to 9 authorized users at $0 each. A Costco membership is required. Cash advance rate is 22.49% outside Quebec and 21.99% in Quebec. Eligibility: minimum $15,000 individual annual income, the lowest income bar of any card in this set. CIBC files this card under its 'Personal liability' business card group. CIBC'S OWN PRODUCT PAGE AND BENEFITS GUIDE CONTRADICT EACH OTHER on which categories earn 3% versus 2%. The product page puts shipping, insurance services and non-Costco gas at 2%; the benefits guide puts them at 3%. This is exactly the FAQ-versus-agreement pattern flagged in the brief. THE $8,000 CAP IS PER CATEGORY AND RESETS ON 1 JANUARY, not on the account anniversary. A business opening the card in November gets barely two months of the first cap year. Purchase security and extended warranty share a $60,000 LIFETIME cap across every CIBC card the person holds, not a per-card or per-year cap. Costco warehouse purchases earn only 1% on a card branded Costco. A paid Costco membership is a hard prerequisite. Mobile device claims carry a 10% deductible on the depreciated value, not the purchase price. PERSONAL GUARANTEE: CIBC groups this under 'Personal liability cards'.
Our verdict
Nine free employee cards on a card that costs nothing is the best employee economics of any bank issued business card here, and for a business with a small team that is worth more than a percentage point somewhere else. The 3% on restaurants and Costco fuel is a genuine rate on real spending.
The caps are tight and the documentation is contradictory. $8,000 a year per category means the 3% is worth at most $240 before it drops to 1%, and CIBC's product page and benefits guide put shipping, insurance and non Costco fuel in different tiers. Where an issuer contradicts itself we record the conservative reading, which is why our figures may look lower than the marketing.
