What the benefits really mean
USD-denominated business card. Statements, balances and payments are all in US dollars, so there is NO currency conversion cost when paying US-dollar suppliers. One of very few USD business credit cards available in Canada. HARD ELIGIBILITY GATE, published by Desjardins: 'Must have a Canadian Desjardins business credit card'. You cannot get this card standalone. Transactions in currencies other than USD are converted to USD with a 2.5% fee. Common carrier accident insurance up to $100,000. Auto rental collision/loss damage waiver. 21-day interest-free grace period on purchases. Includes 24/7 travel assistance, a business concierge service, Visa Account Updater and zero liability fraud protection. Managed through 'Desjardins My US Card'. Annual fee: US$30 per card. You must already hold a Canadian Desjardins business credit card. This is a companion product, not a standalone card. The annual fee is billed in US dollars (US$30), so the CAD cost floats with the exchange rate. No rewards at all. Non-USD foreign transactions still incur 2.5%. Requires an existing Desjardins business relationship, which is impractical outside Quebec and Ontario.
Our verdict
For a business that buys in US dollars, holding a card denominated in the currency you owe removes the conversion charge entirely rather than reducing it. On $50,000 of American supplier payments that saves about $1,250 a year against a standard Canadian card, which makes US$30 look like nothing.
The constraint is that it is a companion card. You cannot get this without already holding a Canadian Desjardins business card, so it is only available to businesses inside that relationship. If you are not with Desjardins and you buy in US dollars, Float's 0.25% and Loop's zero foreign transaction fee do a similar job without the banking relationship.
