What we like, and what we don’t

Worth having

  • 0% on balance transfers for 12 statement periods, on transfers made in the first 90 days
  • 12.99% purchase rate, less than half what most cards on this page charge
  • No annual fee
  • Up to nine authorized users at no extra cost
  • MBNA Payment Plans let you split purchases over $100 across 6, 12 or 18 months

Watch out for

  • Not available to Quebec residents. Only the True Line Gold is offered there
  • One late minimum payment ends the 0% promotion and the balance moves to 17.99%
  • 3% transfer fee, so moving $10,000 costs $300 before you save a cent
  • Carrying a promotional balance means new purchases start accruing interest immediately, because the grace period only applies if you pay the full balance
  • Payments above the minimum are split across balances in proportion, so you cannot target the 12.99% purchases ahead of the 0% transfer
  • No rewards, no travel insurance, no purchase protection
  • You cannot transfer a balance from another TD Bank Group card

The earning fine print

No rewards. This is a low interest and balance transfer card, and the 12.99% purchase rate is the lowest on this page by a wide margin.

What the offer actually requires

0% on balance transfers for 12 statement periods, on transfers made within 90 days of opening the account, with a 3% transfer fee. Two things the headline does not say. The clock runs per transfer rather than from approval, so a transfer made on day 89 gets its own twelve periods. And ONE late minimum payment ends the promotion and moves the remaining balance to 17.99%.

What the benefits really mean

FOREIGN TRANSACTION, CASH ADVANCE AND NSF FEES ARE DELIBERATELY BLANK. MBNA publishes no rates and fees schedule for this card and defers every fee to the disclosure statement you get at approval. MBNA does publish those figures for its Amazon card, but that is a different product and we have not carried them across. No insurance of any kind is listed for this card, while the True Line Gold does list purchase assurance and extended warranty.

Our verdict

The right tool if you are carrying a balance at 20% and want to stop the bleeding. Twelve statement periods at 0% on a $10,000 balance saves roughly $2,000 of interest against a typical card, and the 3% fee costs $300 of that.

Two traps decide whether it works. Never miss a minimum payment, because one slip ends the promotion. And do not spend on this card while a transferred balance sits on it: the grace period only applies when you pay the whole balance off, so every new purchase starts charging interest from the day you make it.
