What the benefits really mean
A rare combination in this segment: $0 annual fee, $0 employee cards, AND a 16.99% purchase rate. Three points below the 19.99%-20.99% norm for no-fee business cards. The trade-off is no rewards at all. Insurance: purchase assurance and extended warranty, trip interruption, baggage delay, accidental death coverage, personal effects, and car rental protections, underwritten by American Bankers Insurance Company; dollar amounts not published on the product page. UNDERWRITING: same heavy documentation as the Rewards card. Corporate documents, two years of Notices of Assessment, business financial statements and personal net worth statements. PROVINCE: Servus operates in Alberta only. Free employee cards: Unlimited at $0. Servus publishes a 'supplemental card fee of $0'. No rewards whatsoever. This is a pure cost-minimisation card. Cash advance rate is not published for this card (the brochure leaves it blank while listing 16.99% for the other two). Requires two years of Notices of Assessment and a personal net worth statement. Alberta only; requires Servus membership. Foreign transaction fee is not published anywhere.
Our verdict
No fee, no employee card fees and a rate three points below the norm is an unusual combination, and it makes this the sensible default Servus business card. Its own $75 Low Rate card has the identical 16.99% rate and charges $75 for every card, which makes that product hard to explain.
The trade is that it earns nothing. If you clear the balance every month, ATB's free MyBusiness Rewards card pays 1% on everything for the same nothing and is the better Alberta choice. If you carry a balance, three points of rate beats 1% of cash back at any level of spending, and this is the card.
