What we like, and what we don’t

Worth having

  • No annual fee
  • 3% back at Walmart in store, on walmart.ca and on Walmart Marketplace
  • 1% everywhere else, wherever Mastercard is accepted
  • $25 in Reward Dollars after $75 of spending in the first 30 days, which is easy money
  • No income requirement published

Watch out for

  • Reward Dollars can only be spent at Walmart. There is no statement credit, cheque or transfer
  • The 3% rate is calculated on the pre tax amount while the 1% rate is calculated after tax
  • Redemption starts at $5 and moves in $5 increments, so odd balances sit unused
  • You cannot redeem against tobacco, lottery, alcohol, prescriptions or gift cards
  • Purchases made through Klarna earn 1%, not 3%
  • No travel insurance

The earning fine print

AT THE PARTNER: 3% in Walmart Reward Dollars on purchases at Walmart in Canada. In-store, on walmart.ca, and on Walmart Marketplace, calculated on the pre-tax amount. EVERYWHERE ELSE: 1%, calculated on the post-tax amount (a small but real difference the terms make explicit). Accès Pharma chez Walmart (Quebec) earns 1%, not 3%. Purchases made through Klarna earn 1%, not 3%. The 3% grocery figure above reflects the fact that Walmart Supercentres sell groceries. Groceries bought anywhere OTHER than Walmart earn 1%. Fairstone publishes no annual cap on earning in the Version U (Sep 2025) Reward Dollars programme terms. This card was re-launched on 18 September 2025; the pre-2025 version paid 1.25% at Walmart, so older third-party listings are stale.

The welcome offer

Welcome bonus
$25 after you spend $75, within 1 month

What the offer actually requires

$25 Reward Dollars welcome bonus after spending $75 in the first 30 days (walmart.ca card page). Walmart also advertises up to 6 months free Walmart+ / Delivery Pass with an annual subscription purchase, which Walmart values at $44.50, and headlines the package as 'up to $800 in value your first year'. That $800 figure is a marketing composite built from assumed spend and coupon offers, not a guaranteed benefit. No end date is published for the welcome offer.

What the benefits really mean

No embedded insurance at all on the standard tier. Fairstone's disclosure statement attributes Purchase Assurance and the doubled-warranty benefit to the premium (World) card only, and offers the standard-card holder an Extended Warranty Plan and a Balance Protection Plan as PAID optional monthly add-ons. Rate structure has two tiers: the Preferred Rate (21.99% purchases / 22.99% cash and balance transfers; in Quebec 21.99% for both) and a Standard Rate card (26.99% purchases / 27.99% cash) that is not offered in Quebec. The applicant does not choose which they get. After two missed payments the rate is adjusted to 26.99% (Preferred) or 29.89% (Standard). Cash advance fee $5 at a Canadian bank machine or teller; over-limit $29 charged when the balance first exceeds the limit and again each month it stays over. No interest-free grace period on cash advances or balance transfers. Reward Dollars are NOT cash back. They can only be spent at Walmart. There is no statement credit, no cheque and no transfer out. The 3% rate is pre-tax; the 1% everywhere-else rate is post-tax. The terms state this asymmetry explicitly. Redemption is blocked on tobacco, lottery, alcohol, prescription medication, gift cards used as cash equivalents, account payments, balance transfers and cash advances. So you cannot use rewards on a large share of a typical Walmart pharmacy/liquor basket. Reward Dollars are forfeited immediately and automatically if the account closes, for any reason. Redemption currently requires the physical card in store or a registered card on walmart.ca. Mobile wallet redemption is not supported. You may be issued the 26.99% Standard Rate card rather than the 21.99% Preferred Rate card; the advertised '21.99% low preferred rate' is not guaranteed. Quebec's Accès Pharma chez Walmart earns 1%, not the headline 3%.

Our verdict

If a large share of your household budget goes through Walmart, 3% on that spending for no annual fee is a solid return, and the $25 welcome bonus for $75 of spending is close to free money. Walmart is also one of the few retail co-brands where the partner rate applies online, in store and on the marketplace.

The rewards are not cash, and the restrictions on them are unusually specific: only at Walmart, only in $5 blocks, and not on tobacco, alcohol, lottery or prescriptions. The pre tax and post tax asymmetry is a small thing but it tells you how the programme is designed. Take it as a Walmart discount card rather than a cash back card and it is fine.
